Tragedy in Pennsylvania! Dominicans in New York fear for their families 🇩🇴🇺🇸
Our people in New York are following the shooting in Pennsylvania with great anguish, which left nine dead, including children and women. 💔
My Serie 56 family in the USA, the worry is running high right now here in New York among us Dominicans who have relatives living in the state of Pennsylvania. The reason for so much anguish is a regrettable shooting that happened in the city of Erie, where nine people lost their lives to gunfire, causing deep pain throughout our diasporic community. 😢
To give you an idea of the scale, about 227,000 Dominicans live in the entire state of Pennsylvania according to official figures, and specifically in the city where the tragedy happened, several families from the homeland reside among its nearly ninety-four thousand inhabitants. This fateful place is about 708 kilometers away from Manhattan. 🗺️
The tragic events happened on a Friday during a family gathering in a home on Perry Street. According to the police report, a 45-year-old gunman shot eight people before taking his own life with his own weapon. Among the innocent victims are two small children, three women (including one eight-months pregnant) and two young men. 🕊️
Local authorities arrived at the scene after an alert from the ShotSpotter system and the intervention of a SWAT tactical team, confirming that the deaths occurred before their arrival. Although there is still no definitive cause, the police reported that a possible mental health issue is being investigated as the trigger for this sad event that is mourning so many families. 🕯️
